According to a survey conducted by the book service "Litres" on the eve of Russia Day, Russians are most proud of Alexander Pushkin, 78% of respondents voted for him. Second and third places were taken by Mikhail Bulgakov (68%) and Fyodor Dostoevsky (64%).
Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy were just a little behind the top three, with 62% and 61% of respondents voting for them. Also in the top ten writers for whom Russians feel proud are Sergei Yesenin (59%), Nikolai Gogol (57%), Mikhail Lermontov (56%), Anna Akhmatova (50%), and Korney Chukovsky(46%).

“It’s interesting that Anna Akhmatova, and not Marina Tsvetaeva, was in the top 10; Alexander Ostrovsky, the most popular Russian playwright, was also missing, but readers noted Korney Chukovsky,” commented Ekaterina Pisareva, editor-in-chief of the Liters.
Also, more than 90% of survey participants admitted that they are proud of domestic writers and that their works do not lose relevance today. Also, 66% believe that classical works make it possible to learn about the history of Russia, 59% of respondents are sure that thanks to the works of classics, one can learn about the Russian spirit, and 58% - believe that classics reveal the secret of the psychology of behavior and actions of the Russian people.
The survey was conducted by Liters in June 2023 and involved 1,400 users from all over Russia over 16 years of age.
